It’s impossible to separate Godwill Oke (Godly the Ruler) from the art they create. Teaching themselves production, mixing and mastering from the age of 14, they assembled a home studio with the help of their mother, who encouraged Godly and bought them basic tools like LogicPro. Born in Nigeria and immigrating to the North Side of Chicago with their parents when they were five, music was always a firsthand form of expression. There has always been a physicality to Godly’s music, whether it be the DIY spaces where they have carved out a community, to the listener-base they grew on Soundcloud, at one point amassing over 130 tracks on platform that read as voice notes from the artist’s ever-evolving charismatic bars and experimental production.
